The Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Prophets Project Presents:
“Religious Humanism in Resistance to State Violence”
May 4 to 6, 2007
At Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, MA

What is the UU Prophets Project?
Since 1998, The Prophets Project has been examining our long UU history of social action in conversation with radical elders who have had long-term involvement in social justice movements and Unitarian Universalism.

This, our fifth conference, will take place from May 4 – 6 in Boston, MA. We invite anyone interested in Unitarian Universalist history, identity and action to come and participate. We extend a special welcome to UU Seminarians and Young Adults.

Topic: Religious Humanism in Resistance to State Violence
In the 1930’s and early 40’s, the American Unitarian Association made a break with the past by inviting religious humanist perspectives into dialogue and humanist leaders into its national office. The consequences of this shift were dramatic, influencing events ranging from the foundation of the Unitarian Service Committee, opposition to U.S. injustices printed in the national AUA news magazine, to the development of Unitarian Sunday School curricula that went far beyond the bible. There was also a chilling national reaction to the growing humanist voice, especially from the U.S. Congressional House Un-American Activities Committee.

This year's Young Adults Prophets Seminar will explore the legacy of Unitarian Universalist Religious Humanism in these events and in the leaders who initiated them. As part of this seminar we will look at three key figures in the 1930s, 40s and 50s:

A. Powell Davies, Prominent Unitarian minister
Stephan Frichtman, Dissident Unitarian leader
Sophia Lyon Fahs, Unitarian Religious Educator

Young Adult Prophets Seminars look to UU justice leaders from the past for guidance about moral arguments that are relevant today. Our seminar this year will examine current issues with the help of contemporary religious humanist leaders. (speakers to be arranged.)

Seminar Format
The weekend will be a combination of plenary sessions and focused small group discussions. We are currently organizing speakers at a national level, and welcome input from interested participants. There will be time set aside for worship and reflection as well.

We invite the submission of papers by interested participants, including those wishing to present an alternative or critical viewpoint of the topic. Please contact Julia Hamilton if you are interested in working on the programming aspect of the seminar.

Beyond the Walls
The Prophets Project is committed to ongoing research and dialogue with Unitarian Universalist scholars and radicals. Previous seminars have been videotaped and archived and the material presented is currently being formatted for use as a Religious Education resource. We hope to continue the tradition by making the work done at this conference available for future use.
