Audio from Ann Marie Sayers and Kanyon Sayers at Indian Canyon
The New College class: Hidden Histories on the Edge Between Native America and the US Empire, recently took a trip to Indian Canyon, near Holister California. We met with Ann Marie Sayers, Ohlone Elder whose ancestors survived in that remote canyon during the mission era and the land grab that followed it. Ann Marie worked for many years to finally get the Bureau of Land Management to turn the land over to her and she runs it now as a retreat, ceremonial center, and organizing base for Ohlone and California Native American projects. Our class included Sean McMahon, techie from New College, who audio taped the interview and comments Ann Marie shared. Ann Marie's daughter, Kanyon, was also on hand to sing a traditional Chumash song.
The interview is part of the work of Fixing the Big Picture, a research institute at New College that produces audio and films educating about native rights, corporatization, and the false god of nationalism. In that work we enjoy the ongoing support of Mary Jean Robertson, host and producer of Voices of Native Nations who conducted the interview.
